If you were to get out a map and track the history of house music – with endless lines sprouting from New York, Chicago and Detroit to points all over the world – you’d have to make a big, red circle around Miami, Florida, and start drawing. Miami was never ground zero to a full-fledged subcultural movement. But it is where Oscar Gaetan, better known as Oscar G, has lived every day of his life. And that fact alone makes it a hub on the global underground.

An award-winning songwriter, producer, and DJ, Oscar is one of dance music’s brightest and most enduring stars. As part of seminal production teams Liberty City, Murk, and Funky Green Dogs, he boasts hits – Billboard chart-toppers as well as underground smashes – in every decade, every trend, and every market. “Some Lovin’,” “Fired Up,” and “Dark Beat” are more than just tracks: They are moments, shared by clubbers worldwide. They’re the kind of moments Oscar still creates at Space Miami, his hometown superclub, where he’s been a resident DJ for a staggering eight years – coming full circle after a globetrotting career.

Oscar and longtime friend and production partner Ralph Falcon grew up in a Miami enlivened by the fresh spirit of hip-hop. “Break dancing, graffiti and the music that went along with it: That’s really what got me into DJ-ing in the first place,” he says. By the age of 12, he was already spinning at school dances.

Oscar and Ralph started working together at the end of high school, blending the sounds of their youth with the beginnings of house, like Ten City and Blaze; and the darker Euro bands of the time, like Depeche Mode and New Order. “We were always big on doing our own sound, with our own feeling and vibe in every aspect of it; from the way we mixed things to the sounds we chose,” says Oscar. “I remember being obsessed with that for years, and then people started to listen.”

The early years bore some of the work for which they’re still best known, like often imitated, never duplicated vocals “Some Lovin’,” “If You Really Love Someone,” and “Reach For Me” (Tribal). Upon their release in 1993, the pair became instant superstars. “Europe kind of grabbed us,” says Oscar, so they spent a good amount of time touring overseas, eventually visiting every major and minor outpost of the global dance scene, including Zouk Singapore, Ministry Of Sound London, and Stereo Montreal.

“Fired Up!” (Twisted), their biggest hit ever, followed in 1996. It topped the Billboard Dance chart, and even cracked the Top 100, peaking at No. 80. They would go on to remix countless major pop artists, from Madonna to Cher to Donna Summer; and appear on mainstream outlets like MTV and Top Of The Pops. The boys also cut two complete Funky Green Dogs albums for major label MCA, “Star” (1999) and “Super California” (2001). But their own measures of success were still decidedly underground: “Once Junior Vasquez played our records at Sound Factory [in New York], we felt like we could retire, and at that point we were like 20,” says Oscar.

In March 2000, Space opened in downtown Miami with Oscar as the Saturday night resident, just as the world was paying its annual visit for Winter Music Conference. The club – with its cavernous main room, pummeling German sound system and nitrogen blasts – was the talk of dance world, and the legend of Oscar’s residency began to grow.

The year 2003 was a big one. Oscar released the “Live @ Space” (Star 69) compilation, and won the Club World Award for “Best Resident DJ” (which he won again in 2007). Murk set a new Billboard Dance chart record, with five No. 1’s in a single year: Four singles from their self-titled artist album on Tommy Boy Records, and “Dark Beat” (Twisted), tribal house’s first real vocal anthem, which found its way from dance floors onto mainstream radio. “We came up with ‘Dark Beat’ in about 15 minutes. Whenever things come that quickly, you know there’s something to them,” says Oscar. “But we didn’t think radio or anthem; we were thinking more like, ‘Oh man, Danny Tenaglia’s gonna be all over this!’”

In 2006, Oscar became one of Pacha New York’s only non-NY-based monthly residents, strengthening his bond with his home-away-from-home, and its rich dance history. He released a second installment in the Space series in 2007, starting new relationships with Nervous Records in the U.S. and CR2 in the U.K. CR2 also snapped up the Murk catalog, and commissioned new remixes of the classic tracks, including Paul Woolford’s takes on “If You Really Love Someone” and “Reach For Me.” And in 2008, after nearly two decades making music, Oscar released out his first solo album, “Innov8” (Nervous).

Even though his passion for music creation is undeniable, it’s in his DJ booth where Oscar feels most at home. “On the music side, I’ve felt pretty energized lately, because the changes in the industry really enable you to be a lot more experimental and take more chances,” he says. “But DJ-ing to me always comes first: I really believe in it as an art form. Having a residency like Space, with a regular crowd, it’s the ultimate.”

Go Ventures has unveiled 2 of the headliners for the House of Horror stage at the 14th annual Monster Massive on Saturday October 29th. New York house superstar Erick Morillo makes his Monster Massive debut & 1st SoCal festival appearance in nearly 10 years. Joining him will be the always amazing Moby, who we are happy to welcome back after last year’s stellar performance.

About Erick Morillo

There really is very little in the world of music and entertainment that Erick Morillo hasn’t turned his hand to. He’s a platinum-selling artist, he’s topped the charts worldwide as the producer behind Reel 2 Real’s hit “I Like To Move It” (used in both Madagascar movies, reaching millions of viewers worldwide and covered by Will I Am in Madagascar 2) and he’s been responsible for a bewildering array of dance-floor tracks including ‘Reach’, ‘Believe’, ‘Do What You Want’ and ‘I Feel Love’ – under pseudonyms including Ministers De La Funk, The Dronez (with Harry ‘Choo Choo’ Romero and Jose Nunez) and Li’l Mo Ying Yang. He’s remixed everyone from Whitney Houston to Basement Jaxx and continues to run the legendary Subliminal Records house music empire. On his debut album he collaborated with Puff Daddy and Boy George alike. And on his second solo artist album he’s setting his sights even higher: “We’ve already put the message out to Prince and 50 Cent,” says Morillo from his palatial home in Miami, where he has lived for the past four years. “The time is right. Dance music has been received really well, not only by people in clubs but also in the American mainstream. The success of Lady Gaga and Black Eyed Peas means that dance music is being played by MTV. The pendulum has swung back.”

For over a decade now, Erick has remained one of the most in-demand and instantly recognisable DJs in the world. From the instant success of his weekly ‘Sessions’ parties in New York, to hosting events like the annual road-blocking Subliminal Sessions parties in Miami at Winter Music Conference, to his coveted residency at Ministry of Sound (he’s still one of the only American DJs to ever hold one) and of course his now legendary Subliminal Sessions parties at Pacha, Ibiza, he’ll now be celebrating his 13th historic season at the club in 2010. His non-stop DJing schedule has seen him straddling the globe playing up to a whopping 30 gigs a month, particularly in the summer months where he’ll play from Rome and Mykonos to London and – but never far from his weekly Wednesday show at Pacha, Ibiza. He’s also become a familiar television personality through his appearances on MTV and MTV Ibiza two years in a row whilst starring in a seven part series for UK TV station, Channel 4, which followed him around the world to the biggest parties and was aired to millions of viewers.

Raised in Colombia, then New Jersey, Erick was weaned on a musical diet of Latin rhythms, reggae and hip-hop. He started DJing at the age of 11 and after securing himself DJ sets at several local gigs decided to take a studio engineering course at the local Centre of Media Arts. He was soon inducted into the house fraternity through his friend Marc Anthony (the Salsa King), whilst he was working with the now legendary Louie Vega and Kenny “Dope” Gonzalez on “Ride On The Rhythm”. “Louie’s watched out for me since the beginning,” he says. Indeed, last summer the duo DJd together at Pacha Ibiza for the first time in a decade. One minor detail: in the booth was a certain supermodel called Naomi Campbell and beside her was one of Erick’s musical heroes, the legendary Quincy Jones. “Can you believe it? Quincy Jones came to my party,” grins Erick, still in shock a year later. When we saw him there, Louie and I decided to play a bunch of his classics, like Michael Jackson’s Don’t Stop Til You Get Enough’. He told me he loved my bass lines,” smiles Erick. “One of the proudest days in my life.”

In 1997, after spending almost a year of meticulously planning everything from logos to packaging, Morillo took it that one step further and launched Subliminal Records with his production partners Harry Romero and Jose Nunez. Guided by Morillo’s ear and studio presence, the brand has gone on to become synonymous with a funky, soulful house sound.

In 2004 Erick released his first artist album worldwide, entitled “My World” it featured heavyweight collaborations from the likes of Puff Daddy, DJ Rap, Terra Deva and even a reunion with the Mad Stuntman. The first single taken from the album was “Break Down The Doors” featuring the Audio Bullys and with its success came Erick’s debut music video, featuring Erick, Audio Bullys and a cameo by his supermodel friend Naomi Campbell. He’ll be returning the favour by DJing at her birthday party in the South Of France this year. Add to this a residency at Pacha NYC (where Erick is also one of the club’s share-holders), a February tour of Australia and South America (he’ll be at Carnival in Brazil alongside fellow house heads Luciano and Steve Angello this year), he even found himself a favorite of a certain pair of princes when performing at the Concert for Diana after-party at London’s Wembley Arena. And this is only what he’s done so far.

Next up is his long-awaited second album. “My last record came out in 2004,” he reasons. “I’ve already made a couple of tracks with people like Richard Grey, Eddie Thoneick and Harry Romero,” he reveals, “but I didn’t think I had that fire before – and now I have that fire again. The idea is to have a single before the summer at the very least and an album later in the year.” At WMC this year, Erick will be performing at Ultra Fest where he has performed over the past five years. “It’s turned into a powerhouse and attracts more than 30,000 people a year,” says Erick, ever the entrepreneur. “Ill also be celebrating my birthday at LIV on the 27th as well as hosting a pool party at The Fontainebleau which I have to say has a bigger and better pool and an even better crowd!”

After that, Erick will be focusing on Ibiza again – making an appearance at the Ibiza Music Summit first of all. Erick and David Guetta will appear on a panel titled Big Dog DJs: F*** You We’re Famous, where they will discuss their global reach and appeal. IMS founder Pete Tong will moderate. “I’ve been asked in the past and agreed to do it with David as it felt like a good time to give back,” says Erick. “I realized that I could impart my knowledge of 18-20 years in the industry. Plus it will be a chance to focus on the new aspects of business in music. Indeed, Subliminal – once the home of a burgeoning vinyl business empire – is now entirely digital. “The business of selling music has changed,” he says. Erick says that Subliminal is now back with a bang, with a release schedule of two releases a month. I have a new single with Shawnee Taylor coming out called ‘Live Your Life’ as well as records from Richard Grey, Able The Kid (he’s covered In My Eyes) and look out for a remix of DJ Dero’s ‘Boca Riba’.

There’s one more change in the UK too – Erick will be dipping his toes and beats into matter within the O2 complex on April 17th with special guest Sebastian Ingrosso. “I’ve had a great run at Ministry Of Sound,” he explains of the move, which he insists will not be permanent. “I’ve had a couple of residencies but I wanted to try something new and I really feel like they’re offering something different. I’m not leaving Ministry Of Sound forever!” Then it will be Ibiza season again. “We’re going for a Voodoo theme in 2010,” he reveals. “Subliminal Sessions – Voodoo Nights. I’m definitely going to be the witch doctor. But for me it’s about having fun and being cheeky and the theme touches on both those aspects. “I’m going to be putting people under a spell!” he laughs.

About Moby

i had a long and factual and fairly tedious bio up here but it was, well, long and fairly tedious. so now i have this. although at present i don’t know what ‘this’ is, as i haven’t actually written ‘this’. in writing a bio i’m trying to find that nice balance of self-involvement, pithy self-deprecation, and brevity. which leads me to think that i should just stop here. but i’ve never been one to err on the side of brevity, so i’ll just keep writing.

i was born in nyc on september 11, 1965, and now it’s 2009 and i still live in nyc. which(living in the same city in which i was born) would be provincial and depressing if nyc didn’t happen to be the least provincial and depressing city on the planet. and i’m sort of stuck living in nyc because:

a-i don’t have a drivers license(we all benefit from this, trust me, i’m a terrible driver).
b-most of my friends live here.
c-nyc is nice.

what else about me…i make records and occasionally go on tour and play concerts. i’m currently signed to mute records, which makes me proud because mute is a great label and i get to call nick cave and goldfrapp and diamanda galas my label-mates.

now really is the time when i’m going to force myself to err on the side of relative brevity (my other bio was about 30,000 words). thanks for reading.

-moby.

More artists will be announced in the House of Horror along with lineups for other areas.

With a thriving record label, non-stop releases and a number one hit, things have been considerably heating up for DJ Alexander Technique. His dedication to production, especially this year, has proven to be fruitful in many ways and has reminded us that he is one of the most innovative producers around today. “Where You Are” is the most recent addition to his already impressive discography. This collaboration with heavyweights Harry Romero and Junior Sanchez and vocal extraordinaire Shawnee Taylor, was picked up by Steve Angello and released on his label Size. Pete Tong, David Guetta, Andy Norman, Dirty South and Laidback Luke have supported the Beatport exclusive track, which in a matter of one week reached number one on Beatport’s Main and House Charts.

Through the release world-wide heavy-hitters, his label, Djs Are Not Rockstars, has distinguished itself in the electronic music scene for its exploration of new musical concepts and cultural diversity. In many ways, DANR records reflects Technique’s non-uniform approach towards music, encompassing some of the world’s most renowned producers along side new blooded electronic artists under one umbrella, all producing various genres of dance music. This up-and-coming label is off to an outstanding start with releases featuring the talents of Sia, Princess Superstar, Felix Da Housecat, Larry Tee and Lauren Flax.

Alexander’s Summer 2011 Mix was recorded live in his NYC studio and is an exclusive mix for the Saturday Night Sessions podcast. He gracefully puts together some of the most memorable songs of the summer, with music from Bingo Players, Starkillers & Alex Kenji feat.
A devoted passion for music, alongside an embrace of technology, has fortified Funkagenda as a vanguard of the ‘tough but melodic big room house sound’ – (quote – DJ Magazine). First getting our attention with his Laurent Garnier inspired redux of “Man With The Red Face” with Mark Knight, Funkagenda’s sound attracts musical partnerships a spectrum of genres, remixing artists including Basement Jaxx, Moby, Fat Boy Slim and Dirty Vegas. His production contributions to the Black Eyed Peas album ‘The E.N.D.’ were further recognized by an ‘Album of the Year’ nomination and a ‘Best Pop Vocal Album’ award at the 52nd Annual Grammy’s.

His latest release is a collaboration with Canadian progressive house producer Adam K entitled “Drift” and is out now on Toolroom Records. Definitely not for the faint-hearted, ‘Drift’ has all the hall marks of a huge festival anthem with a prowling lead line reminiscent of Pryda. The break down is simply epic, as the trance inspired plucks open up for that true hands in the air moment. Don’t miss Funkagenda at The Love Festival Southern California on Saturday August 20th. Funkagenda’s Summer 2011 Mix was recorded live at 7th Sunday Festival in Eindhoven, Netherlands in June 2011.

<itunes:summary>A devoted passion for music, alongside an embrace of technology, has fortified Funkagenda as a vanguard of the ‘tough but melodic big room house sound’ – (quote - DJ Magazine). First getting our attention with his Laurent Garnier inspired redux of "Man With The Red Face" with Mark Knight, Funkagenda’s sound attracts musical partnerships a spectrum of genres, remixing artists including Basement Jaxx, Moby, Fat Boy Slim and Dirty Vegas. His production contributions to the Black Eyed Peas album ‘The E.N.D.’ were further recognized by an ‘Album of the Year’ nomination and a ‘Best Pop Vocal Album’ award at the 52nd Annual Grammy’s.

His latest release is a collaboration with Canadian progressive house producer Adam K entitled "Drift" and is out now on Toolroom Records. Definitely not for the faint-hearted, 'Drift' has all the hall marks of a huge festival anthem with a prowling lead line reminiscent of Pryda. The break down is simply epic, as the trance inspired plucks open up for that true hands in the air moment. Don't miss Funkagenda at The Love Festival Southern California on Saturday August 20th. Funkagenda's Summer 2011 Mix was recorded live at 7th Sunday Festival in Eindhoven, Netherlands in June 2011.

The Junior Sanchez & DJ Reza remix is a big room house monster with hints of progressive and electro touches throughout. J-Cut & DJ Reza’s remix starts with a latin piano groove and kicks into a heavy, almost tribal beat. The strong vocal gets a great crowd reaction and the tracks were well received at the 2011 Winter Music Conference.

Barry Weaver’s extensive knowledge of music and virtuoso skills behind the decks have made him a West Coast institution for over 20 years. A firm foundation based in years of experience and an instinct for what lies ahead allow Barry to mine past and present alike; connecting, challenging and always pushing the envelope. With an amazing set of dancefloor-ready, genre-defying tunes, this LA and West Coast veteran will leave you surprised and awestruck. You’ll likely hear minimal techno, house, electro, disco and acid/house classics in one of his always original sets. His Summer 2011 mix effortlessly goes from house to techno and back again with just enough deep & dark tones to keep you curious for more. Barry Weaver has been working on new music releases with DJ Dan under the pseudonym “EZDB” and features the currently unsigned track “(Re)Born” on the mix. <itunes:summary>Barry Weaver's extensive knowledge of music and virtuoso skills behind the decks have made him a West Coast institution for over 20 years. Barry Weaver has been working on new music releases with DJ Dan under the pseudonym "EZDB" and features the currently unsigned track "(Re)Born" on the mix.
